Working on a Sign

On the left is how our sign looked. The bricks were cracked and the wood was rotting and fading.

In the middle is our mock-up. What the sign might look like if we repaired the bricks and put an aluminum panel on top and service times in the middle.

On the right is what it is looking like now. Bricks repaired, and sign installed. We still have to put the lights and make a few adjustments, but so far, so good.

Giving away E-Bibles

E-SwordGiving away Bibles has been a ministry hobby of mine for a long time. I have a tendency to give my own Bible away too often. There was a period of time when I couldn’t keep a Bible in my possession for more than a month. I just always found reasons to give it away. I still do. It usually goes like this:

“Did you ever hear the story of ____?”

“No?”

I begin telling the story. (Bro Stephen, has a blog about biblestorying that was written while he was a missionary in Brazil.)

As I tell, I open my Bible to that passage. When I finish the story, I show the person where it is in scripture.

I ask “Do you have a Bible that’s just for you?” If they say no, I give them mine.

“This is mine, but I want you to have it. I have another Bible at home that I can use.

If the person politely refuses, I just tell them to consider it a gift. I don’t insist. Nine times out of ten, they take the Bible.

I want to point out a free resource: a program called E-Sword, which you can download for yourself by clicking the screenshot above.

Let Your Light Shine…

http://24.media.tumblr.com/99c7091172686775af422207566a3c15/tumblr_ms4vrmnh8Y1qhmhdfo1_500.jpgJesus said:
Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.        Matthew 5:14-16
Letting light shine doesn’t mean doing token good deeds or keeping holy appearances. The Pharisees were good at that. Letting light shine means living in such a way that your life has a transformative effect on the world around you.

What did Jesus do?

bible follow me
Jesus crossed whatever boundaries stood in the way and connected with people. No group was beyond his care. Jesus spent a lot of his time ministering to people, looking for the “sick” not the “healthy,” “sinners” not the “righteous”. He sought out people who knew they needed God’s mercy.

Jesus proclaimed the good news of salvation in words and deeds. In him, God’s rule had become a present reality. He preached, he taught, he rebuked, and he invited everyone he met to repent and believe. He gave his life as a ransom for many.

Jesus led people to put their trust in him and to learn to obey his commands. He modeled and taught them a new way of life.

Jesus formed his disciples into communities characterized by faith in him, love for one another, and witness in word and deed.
For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps.
1Peter 2:21 (English Standard Version)

About Stevendale Baptist Church

flyer back

Stevendale Baptist Church meets on the corner of Stevendale Road and Old Hammond Hwy. There are sixty-five active members and a dozen or so regular visitors. The sanctuary seats more than 300, so there is plenty of room to grow, and we are growing.

Bro Stephen Young, has been serving as pastor for just under a year. He is in his late 30s and spent more than a decade as a missionary in Brazil. His preaching is a mix of chronological Bible storying and expository preaching.

Our worship style is mostly traditional, and includes some blending with contemporary praise and worship. Jay Parker, our music minister is in his early 20s, and is working to expand this ministry. We have just started a choir, open to all, that is a nice multi-racial mix of people, both young and old.

Special events frequent our church calendar. This year, Stevendale Baptist Church has hosted a children's performing arts camp, a vacation Bible school, an Easter egg hunt, two community fun days, and several Southern Gospel concerts.

Senior adult ministry is also a focus of our church. Each Wednesday morning, a dozen or so senior adults meet together for worship and Bible study. Once a month, the service is followed by a great fellowship meal, sometimes catered, sometimes potluck.

A simple structure of committees and ministry teams means communication and cooperation are strong points of Stevendale Baptist Church. If you are looking for a church family, we invite you to join us as we follow Jesus.

Arts & Communication

Photography- Some people just have an eye for taking pictures. Others have a knack for creating mixes of images, even using their cell phones, like this one done by Tracy:

Social Media & Press Releases- Facebook and other services like Twitter and Google have really changed the landscape of communication. Local newspapers, magazines, and websites also offer venues for getting our message out and promoting events. We need helpers to get the word out.

Flyers and Graphic Design – Creating worship and preaching slides, designing event fliers and business cards, and preparing forms and cards all take a bit of creativity and design know-how, but it is quite rewarding Most can be done using a laptop and free software.

Web Design – Our site is hosted on Google blogger, but using some creative CSS and HTML coding, and working with the free editors, we can run an effective website. It needs some dedicated volunteers, though.

Texting and Email – Simple, quick, inexpensive and effective. We just need more fingers!

If any of these areas appeal to you let us know. Send an email to stevendalebc@gmail.com

Easter Egg Hunt–This Saturday

Easter Egg Hunt

We will have a planning meeting on Sunday at 5, and another on Wednesday at 5. Then we will set up Saturday morning at 9.

Senior Adult Ministry

road_sign_rectangal_blank

Young at Heart Ministry Day will repeat on the second Wednesday of every month. As Stevendale Baptist Church begins again to do the work of the ministry to which it was called, our senior adults lead the way. Have a look at these ministry ideas and be thinking of how you would like to to serve.

Writing Letters and Sending Cards: Write personal letters and send birthday, anniversary, and special remembrance cards to others. Write letters on behalf of our church to new visitors to our services, and to those for whom we are praying.

Visitation Ministry: We must be faithful to care for our elderly adults who are home-bound, lonely, hospitalized, or in assisted living. We need some who can help us organize and plan our visitation ministry in such a way that no one gets overlooked.

Telephone Canvassing: Make telephone calls to keep contact, get information from, and invite members to participate in our ministries. We have three telephone lines available at the church and need desperately to contact so many people. If you are skilled on the phone, we need you.

Library Ministry: Stevendale Baptist Church has an amazing space for books and an incredible resource for Christian education. It has become neglected over time. A team of three could have our library back in tip top shape in little time.

Living History: Share your life journey and faith story on a video or audio recording. Make a CD message for your grandchildren telling them why you trusted Jesus and how they can too.

Social Networking with Seniors: Would you like to start a blog, have a Facebook page, or help with our own church sites? Bring a laptop if you have one and Bro Stephen will get you started and train you up. Need some basic computer skills, I will teach you if you promise to pass them on to at least one other person.

Care Packages: Help us put together a gift package to bring on our home visits to shut-ins and for our evangelistic visits.

The Prayer Garden

Pray with your Bible open

Someone once said, “Sin will keep you from the Bible or the Bible will keep you from sin.”  This is partly true, but reading the Bible can actually reinforce the sin of pride and deception if we know more than we obey.

Scripture is inspired and is useful to teach us what is true, to rebuke us when our life doesn’t match up with the truth, to get us back to the path through correction, and to keep us on the path through training in righteousness (2 Tim 3:16).

The Spirit of God feeds us with the Word of God.  God has revealed His will to us in the Bible.  I believe He is waiting for us to pray back to Him what He already wants to do. He has chosen to respond to the prayers of His people.

May we learn how to pray with our Bibles open. We can’t pray effectively without His Word and we can’t read His Word effectively without prayer.

A Speck

Following simple acrostic of the word S.P.E.C.K. will help.speck

Sin to Confess

Praise to Give/Promises to Claim

Example to Follow

Commands to obey

Knowledge to Absorb

As you read the Bible, confess any sin of yours or your church and family that is revealed to you as you ponder God's word. Praise God for all his works, as you read about them in Scripture. Thank God for his promises and trust them. Watch for examples and commit to God to follow, to go and do likewise. Recall to God his commands to us and tell Him your plans to carry them out. Retell God any new things you learned from the scripture you have read. Hide his word in your heart.

This is a rich way to pray and to learn from God through his word.
